Klaviyo vs Mailchimp for Ecommerce

Klaviyo is the more direct documented fit when a store wants ecommerce events, customer profiles, segments, and lifecycle flows to sit at the center of its marketing work. Mailchimp is the more natural documented fit when the business wants email and broader small-business marketing tools in one account and can work within its audience, contact, send, and seat limits. The right choice depends on the data and automations the team will actually maintain.

The short answer

Choose the working model before the email editor

Klaviyo is the more natural starting point when Shopify events, products, orders, and customer behavior will drive most of the marketing plan. Mailchimp is the more natural starting point when the business wants a broader marketing account and its ecommerce program is still fairly simple.

Neither choice fixes a weak email program. A small store with a useful welcome series and a well-maintained customer list can get more from a modest tool than a busy team gets from dozens of half-built automations. Decide who will own the data, write the messages, check failures, and review results every month.

Shopify data

Both can see more than an email address

Klaviyo's Shopify data reference (opens in a new tab) documents customer profiles, orders, checkout activity, cart activity, product details, consent, customer tags, and other events. Those events can be used in segments and flows. Klaviyo also notes important limits: deleting a customer in Shopify does not delete the Klaviyo profile, and changes made to an order after its original event may not be resynced.

Mailchimp's Shopify sync guide (opens in a new tab) documents customers, orders, products, companies, and store events. Most fields update near real time, while the discount-code field follows a different schedule. The integration can support purchase, browse, cart, and checkout automation triggers.

The useful test is not whether an integration exists. Pick five real customer situations—a first purchase, repeat purchase, refund, abandoned checkout, and lapsed buyer—and confirm that the data needed for each message arrives with the right consent and product details.

Automation

Build the first five flows on paper

Klaviyo's Shopify setup connects store data, onsite tracking, forms, and the catalog. Thesetup instructions (opens in a new tab) also show that these parts require choices; they are not just switched on and forgotten. A sensible starting set is welcome, abandoned checkout, post-purchase help, review request, and win-back.

Mailchimp's automation trigger list (opens in a new tab) includes purchases, specific products, abandoned carts and checkouts, store browsing, product views, searches, low-stock cart activity, and transactional-style order events. Some tools depend on the selected plan.

Write down the trigger, wait, branch, message, exit condition, and owner for each flow before comparing screens. If a flow cannot be explained in one minute, it will be hard to troubleshoot during a promotion. Also decide which platform sends order notices so customers do not receive duplicates.

Contacts and cost

A growing list can change the bill before it changes sales

Klaviyo's billing guide (opens in a new tab) says the email plan must cover billable profiles and has a sending allowance. Suppressed profiles remain available for historical reporting but do not count once suppression is fully processed. Klaviyo may move an account to a compliant tier when its profile count is too high.

Mailchimp's plan guide (opens in a new tab) uses contact and send limits, with seats and audiences also varying by plan. Its pricing page currently shows a small free tier, but a store should compare the paid plan it will need after the first few months—not the lowest advertised entry point.

Price a quiet month and a busy month. Include marketable contacts, normal campaigns, automated sends, SMS if needed, additional audiences or stores, users, and any add-on products. Then estimate the monthly time spent cleaning contacts and investigating failed or duplicated messages.

Organization

Account structure matters when the team or store count grows

Mailchimp's Shopify connection guide (opens in a new tab) connects one store to one audience and recommends a separate audience for each additional store. Contacts who appear in more than one audience can create extra cleanup work, so map stores, brands, regions, and consent before connecting them.

Klaviyo offers several documented roles, including owner, admin, manager, analyst, campaign coordinator, and content creator. The role table (opens in a new tab) should be reviewed before inviting an agency or a new employee. Mailchimp seats also vary by plan. In either product, do not share one login across the team.

Switching

Move consent and history with care

Klaviyo documents an all-profile CSV export built from an inclusive segment. Mailchimp also provides contact exports, but its records are organized by audience. These tools help, yet a contact CSV is not a complete copy of templates, automations, creative files, event history, consent evidence, reports, integrations, and account settings.

Before moving, export Klaviyo profiles (opens in a new tab) or Mailchimp contacts (opens in a new tab), document suppression and consent states, copy the messages that must be retained, and list every live form and automation. Pause duplicate sends during cutover. Keep the old account available until the new one has completed a normal campaign and each critical flow has fired correctly.

A useful trial

Test one customer week, not a polished demo

  1. Use a safe test store or controlled customer records with clear consent.
  2. Connect the catalog and verify five products, variants, prices, and images.
  3. Run signup, browse, cart, checkout, purchase, refund, and suppression events.
  4. Build one welcome flow and one abandoned-checkout flow without vendor help.
  5. Have the owner and marketing worker use their intended permissions.
  6. Compare the paid tier required at today's contact count and at twice that count.
  7. Export the customer data and write a rollback plan before choosing.

Editorial method

How this comparison was researched

Commerce Stack Guide reviewed 12 official Klaviyo and Mailchimp pages on August 20, 2026. The research covered plans, billing units, Shopify data, ecommerce events, automation, account structure, roles, exports, and switching risk. The decision criteria and preliminary conclusion were recorded before drafting.

This is documentation research, not a deliverability test or a claim about support quality. No live campaign, paid account, migration, inbox-placement test, or customer database was used. Plans and limits can change; verify the current terms for the account's country and contact count.
